GoGirls showing community spirit @ Folk Alliance '07

I'm in Philly this weekend working on video footage we had shot during Folk Alliance in Memphis, TN back in February. Lynn King and I stayed up late last night putting together this great clip showing the POWER of the GoGirls Music Community I run. Check it out. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I would love to hear your feedback!

I'm also busy working on the new DVD from my workshop at Folk Alliance. It's part of my Indie Music Success series. This one will be volume 2. I know you will enjoy it. We hope to have it for sale in the GoGirls Music Store next month.

SAVENETRADIO - the time has come!

Madalyn's Note: I've been in touch with Nancy at SAVENETRADIO and it's a worthwhile endeavor. Please take a moment to check it out. Thanks!

    Hello friends,

The time has come to take action to SAVENETRADIO. Our site is live at http://www.savenetradio.org/. Please click on the petition link and send a letter to your congressman today.

    Thank you.
    Nancy Tarr Wager
    SAVENETRADIO

As an webcaster, listener and artist you understand Internet radio's revolutionary impact on the ability to reach music fans nationwide and globally. Artists deserve to be fairly paid for their creativity, but a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) to almost triple Internet radio royalty rates has jeopardized the future of Internet radio, and could extinguish one of the few opportunities for independent artists and labels to expand their reach.

The new royalty rates were requested by the major labels who control the RIAA, but their artists are already heavily promoted on broadcast radio while 95% of artists need Internet radio. These higher rates will force many small, non-profit and public service radio stations to stop broadcasting on the Internet, and will virtually eliminate all small and medium-sized webcasters.

And the remaining large webcasters – they will stop streaming too. The few that continue will be forced to negotiate special deals with major record labels that will require more major label content and less independent content to be performed.

Furthermore, these new deals will cut out the artist altogether. If you are among the artists who have received SoundExchange royalties from Internet radio, those will disappear because the major labels' direct deals with webcasters will allow them to circumvent the 50/50 split mandated by the webcast laws and keep 100% of the revenue. This decision is a huge step backwards for the working musician.

We believe Internet radio has created a wonderfully rich and diverse music environment that should be encouraged and promoted. It is a vital alternative to broadcast radio, and for the vast majority of musicians, the only hope they have of exposure to a wide audience.

Don't let your music be silenced. Join us today in the fight to help save Internet radio by signing our petition: www.savenetradio.org/petition. We will use this petition to pressure Congress to do the right thing – to save Internet radio as the new mass medium that enables a diversity of voices, including yours. We hope you will also share your story of Internet radio, and we will print the best stories to demonstrate the value of this innovative medium.

    Thanks for your support.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LIFE

If you don't run your own life, somebody else will.
If you want to see a change for the better, you have to take things in your own hands.

To affect the outcome of anything,
you must control the action at the point of decision making.
You're in control of your life
to the degree that you make the decisions.

If you let others make decisions for you, you have no control.
    When you control your decisions,
    you control the actions.

Madalyn’s Note: Stand up and take charge. It’s your life so why not control it? If you have really good music what is holding you back from being the rock star that is already inside you? If you are unsure about your music, go work on it. Develop your craft! First and foremost you must have great music that will make you stand out from the masses. And if your music is really great, you have to believe it’s really great. If everyone keeps telling you over and over how incredible your music is, listen to them. And I don’t mean your friends and family who love you and might be saying nice things because they are supposed to. I mean industry people. I mean reviewers, bookers, venue owners and even your fans. So what are you doing today to become the rock star that is waiting to emerge from within you?

MAKING CHOICES IS YOUR GREATEST POWER

You can decide to alter the course of your life at any time.
No one can ever take that away from you.
You can do what you want to do
and be who you want to be.

Nature is constantly at work around you.
Character and destiny are her handiwork.
She gives you love and hate,
    jealousy and reverence.
You have the power to choose which impulse you follow.

While your character is formed by your circumstances, your desires can shape those circumstances.
The one thing over which you have absolute control is your own thoughts.
It is this that puts you in a position to control your own destiny.

Your greatest power is the power to choose.

[Madalyn’s Note: Who do you want to be? An astronaut? A secretary? Donald Trump? A hard working, professional musician? You can be anything you want and achieve success because you have the power to choose it. Do you love what you do? If not, change it. You control your life and destiny. Think about that one while sipping your morning coffee. Rock on!]

    Attracting Your Own Success

    by Madalyn Sklar

What are you doing today to attract success when it comes to you and your music career? We are capable of "having it all" if we just decide what it is we want. I know it sounds silly doesn't it! What do we really want? So many indie artists out there know what they want... sell tons of CDs, have adoring fans, go on tour. I could go on and on. But what is success to you? Is it quitting your day job? Touring year-round? Playing before a packed house?

You can attract your own success by first having a written plan. Think about your definition of "success" and write it down. Or just fill in this blank, "I define success as ___________________________________". Don't skimp. Write it all down. What do you really want. Putting together a plan will do amazing things for you. It justifies everything. It will make you feel good. It will put you halfway there. Seriously!

Now the tough part, making it happen. My favorite saying is, "Just Do It". Why is that so hard for people? It's easy for me because I make it easy for me. It allows me to attract success. Remember there is no reward without risk. Take the plunge. Just do it! First step, a positive attitude. Having a great outlook on life does wonders. If you need help in this area go watch or read "The Secret". Second, surround yourself with people who believe in you and your music. You need support. There is nothing worse than getting shot down by your friends and family. But do persist because you need these people in your life. Show them what you are capable of! You need to work on attracting good things. If your thinking gets clouded with negativity, you will have a hard time attracting success.

Get out there. Just do it! Yes, you can!
