Are you spending your time wisely today?

Did you know there are 1,440 minutes in a day? What are you doing to make the most of it? Spend it wisely. Make things happen. Don't be afraid to dream, and dream big. But don't also be afraid to take action. Things will not fall out of the sky and land in your lap. You have to seek out opportunities. You have to make calls and emails. You have to follow up.

Plan your day. Make a to-do list. Don't waste your minutes.

So I went to a music conference... now what?

If you were like many of us who attended SXSW this past weekend, you probably met a bunch of cool people. So now what? Well I would first go through all your new contacts and start by sending an email to each person you met. Let them know it was a joy meeting them in Austin and let this be a start to a great professional relationship. This business is all about networking and making contacts. Don't blow someone off because you think they can't help you. As my friend Sean Agnew says, "you don't know who you don't know."

Be sure to follow-up with all your new friends this week whether it's an email or a personal, handwritten note.

Believe in yourself

Many indie artists have a hard time believing in themselves. When it comes to their music, they don't take themselves seriously. It's not surprising since so many don't have the support system around them that is needed to take away self-doubts. They are told "you will never make it" one too many times.

Sound familiar?

The challenge is to overcome all self-doubts. To push forward and make your mark. Work on your craft, be the best you can be. Learn everything you need to know on the business side. No one says this is easy. But it starts with you. You have to believe in you.

Effective Marketing?

I was reading the paper today and saw an interesting article about a band called this band is a pipe bomb. Now it's an unusual name for a band which can sometimes be very effective (like Death Cab for Cutie) when it comes to marketing. However in this case someone put the band's sticker on their bike! A police officer called the bomb squad only to find out it was the name of a punk rock band, not a notice that an actual pipe bomb was inside the bike! The bike's owner was charged with inducing a panic.

My first reaction to the story was, how stupid can you be? Then after thinking about it further I realized it's actually brilliant marketing. Because of a dumb guy, I mean c'mon on who would put that sticker on their bike!, this band got national attention. Hmm, makes you think.

So today, think outside the box. Find ways to market yourself that no one else is doing. But don't call your band this bike is a pipe bomb and put the sticker on a bike!

My advice for today...

Stick with people who share in your enthusiasm.

Sounds simple but we know in everyday life we are surrounded by people who bring us down. And it sucks! I say remove the negativity in your life. Seek out those who share in your enthusiasm. You'll thank me!
