Why Bands Need Social Networks
It's in our face day in and day out... Social media. Social networks. Myspace. Facebook. Twitter. Blogger. ReverbNation. iLike. Ning. Stereofame. OurStage. And countless others. It's confusing to many. Yet we need these in today's music marketing.
Marketing your music over the Internet has now become the norm. At one time, simply having a website for your music was all you needed. Not anymore! To keep up with the Joneses you need a constant presence on Myspace, Facebook and Twtter. You should also set up LinkedIn, Flickr, ReverbNation and iLike. And it doesn't hurt to have an iPhone or Blackberry so you can do it all from the road.
So why do you really need all this?
Simple. It's free music promotion. You have the opportunity to get your music exposed to more people than ever before. You can realistically reach fans in every corner of the world now. There are countless opportunities to find more gig swaps than ever. You can so easily connect with booking agents and promoters through these networks. But the key to making this work for you is to work it. Spend time working your social networks. And if you can't make the time, get a team to help you.
How about some shortcuts? Absolutely!
- My friend and fellow blogger Greg Rollett has put out a great resource on social media sites for musicians. Click here to get your copy. I highly recommend this free PDF.
- Ping.fm is a GREAT web site where you can update your social network status in one quick shot. I've been having some fun with this.
- Sign up for my FREE Facebook Marketing Tips for Musicians.
There you have it. Send me your thoughts on this. I'd love to hear from you!

Funny isn't it how you can stumble across an old article and realise how it is even more true today than when it was written.
With Facebook now surpassing Google for traffic all musicians who want more exposure (and more fans ;) need to be using Social Media to help them.
A timely reminder thanks Madalyn!
