Smart marketing for musicians - are you newsworthy?
Last night one of our GoGirls Elite member bands, 3 Kisses, was on ABC’s Wife Swap. Pretty cool. Equally cool was another GoGirls member, Yvonne Doll of The Locals, was on NBC’s The Today Show yesterday morning. What I found interesting about this is they both did SMART things to get televised coverage which in turn promoted their band and their music.
The 3 Kisses story starts off easy. This Texas band saw a post I put out to the GoGirls Elite list soliciting for husband/wife or family rock bands. One of the producers for the show got in touch with me looking for this. Tish of 3 Kisses immediately responded to the ad. But it took time, it took perseverance and over time it paid off. Most would have given up. Not Tish! Word from ABC today is that last night’s episode of Wife Swap generated the highest ratings in the show’s history. If you watched it, you probably noticed me for a half a second in the group shot doing a Jager shot. If you blinked you missed it. LOL. But it was smart because the band is endorsed by Jagermeister. You probably noticed the placement of Paul Reed Smith and Daisy Rock guitars in many shots. They have endorsements from both companies too. They used that to their full advantage. Do you know how much advertisement costs during prime time television? Tish gave them free advertising. I have one word for that… brilliant!

Yvonne Doll of Chicago based The Locals has an interesting story and it made it onto The Today Show yesterday morning. She started a web site showing off photos she took on the subway using her camera phone. I know, sounds harmless. You can check it out at http://www.sleepyurbanite.com/. It’s pictures of people sleeping on the train. It stirred up some controversy about privacy. But what it did was gain local attention that got her on the local news then onto national TV. Here’s the brilliant part, on this web site while you are viewing her “cell phone art” you are listening to streaming music from her CD. How awesome! It also mentions her band’s next show as well as a link to her band’s web site. This is very smart marketing. I’ve known Yvonne for many years. She is the designer of our GoGirls Elite logo as well as our famous “Invasion of the GoGirls” poster art.
